Well, it seems as though old man winter is still hanging on! We are getting a lot of much needed moisture, but it is also providing the perfect conditions for fleas and ticks on our beloved fur babies! Here at the Paw Spa we have seen a number of dogs come in with fleas already. With the temperatures rising back up to 70degrees after our recent rain/snow, the increase in humidity in the air is allowing the fleas and ticks to thrive more than usual this year!
We recommend regular flea and tick checks during routine bath and brushing. Also, additional preventative measures such as Frontline drops or spray is a great option because it is non-toxic. Flea collars are another common choice however, be aware that many of the collars on the market have high levels of unregulated chemicals that can be fatal to some pets.
Another concern besides flea and ticks is heartworm. When pets drink water that has been incubated with mosquito larvae, they can become affected by heartworm. Again, preventative measures, namely, heartworm tests with the veterinarian is highly recommended!
Wishing peace, love, and *healthy* paws.
See you soon!
